Education and Drugs

You cannot escape the reality that the drug or alcohol addiction of your son or daughter is closely related to their education. Either the addiction has severely disrupted their education or even that the school environment has contributed to causing or increasing the addiction.

Even if you have home schooled or your child has attended a private Christian school, the potential to become an addict to either drugs or alcohol still exists.

In any case, you already know that your child’s educational experience is a significant factor in the recovery and rehabilitation process. It is important that the student is enrolled in a program designed to keep making progress in the academic part of his or her education. That progress could include finishing the high school diploma or beginning a college academic program if appropriate.

Many of the students and parents in our programs report that their previous school experience has been negative with some of the following characteristics.

  • Schools that failed to recognize or address special needs of students
  • Being isolated in “special” classrooms
  • Ostracized and made fun of
  • Overcrowded schools that don’t recognize individual differences
  • Classroom environments that are out of control and disruptive
  • Total disregard and even derision of a belief in God

Several of the teens and young adults we work with tell stories of being told over and over that they were failures or were often given disciplinary actions that were totally ineffective. These students also indicate the negative influence their “friends” and the party-culture of high school has had on them.

It is a fact that many teens and young adult students who are addicted are very intelligent, curious and creative, even if those qualities haven’t been recognized by their prior schools.

Successful Recovery and Continuing Education

Our mission is to help each young person we serve reach full recovery from the addiction, start the journey towards successful rehabilitation and incorporate a successful educational program into the process. The programs we will guide you into have educational programs that treat each student as an individual and all parts of the curriculum are designed to combine knowledge, imagination and creativity into a system that helps the young person lead a successful, enjoyable life as an independent adult.

The mentors and coaches your loved one will encounter will take the time to instruct him or her in the important things of learning skills and knowledge. His instructors will go further and guide him in doing those things that build good habits and behaviors that are repeatable and will develop self-confidence and improve self-esteem. All those daily good-living behaviors will be frameworked within Christian principles and solid scriptural foundations.

Steps to a Better Life

When a person first arrives at a typical program, they will meet with an academic counselor to build and Individualized Education Plan or IEP. This program will establish learning goals and educational objectives based on particular interests and needs. The individualized program developed will address not only the immediate needs, but help the person get started on a successful life after completing the recovery and rehabilitation program.

A typical program offers a rich and varied set of options including:

  • Completing a high school diploma through the home school
  • Getting the diploma through a nearby college or university
  • Studying for and Passing the General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Start or complete an Associates Degree from a community college
  • Participate in a vocational training program

Interwoven throughout the more traditional educational components are the continuing parts of the recovery and rehabilitation, the typical program includes

  • Addiction education including individual, group and external 12-step meetings
  • Emotional and psychological education and counseling
  • Career education
  • Life skills education and training
  • Counseling and discipling from a Christian perspective
  • We know how important learning and education is to all our clients.
